Fifteen million dong is about $575. In Hanoi it is a salary you hear a lot from people a few years into office jobs, though plenty earn less and some, especially in tech, earn much more. Young workers have a phrase for living on it: "không phải sống, mà là xoay", not living, just juggling.

Rather than give advice, here is one plausible month, written out line by line.

October, on 15 million

The setup: a room in a shared house down a lane in Đống Đa, motorbike commute of about 7 km, office in Cầu Giấy.

  • Room: 3,200,000 VND. Rooms like this are listed anywhere from about 3 to 6.5 million depending on size and whether there's a window; this one has a small one.
  • Electricity: 420,000 (it was still hot in early October). Water: 100,000 flat.
  • Lunch, 21 working days: about 980,000, mostly rice shops at 45,000, a few delivery orders.
  • Breakfast and dinner, mostly cooked or bánh mì: around 1,600,000.
  • Petrol: 380,000. Parking at the office: 150,000.
  • Phone: 120,000. Netflix split four ways: 70,000.
  • Sent home to parents: 1,500,000.
  • A colleague's wedding: 500,000 in the envelope.
  • Coffee and milk tea: about 540,000.
  • Motorbike oil change and a new brake pad: 260,000.
  • A T-shirt and a cheap pair of sandals: 350,000.
  • Medicine for a cold: 90,000.

Total: about 10.26 million VND, leaving roughly 4.7 million. That is a good month. Add a second wedding, a broken phone screen or a trip home for a family event and the cushion shrinks fast; November and the run-up to Tết are usually tighter.

What tends to push the number up

Delivery fees. A 40,000 VND lunch with 15,000–20,000 VND in delivery and service fees costs 40–50% more. People in offices often order together to split one fee.

Drinks. Two milk teas or iced coffees a day at 30,000–45,000 each would cost more than this person's entire petrol and parking.

Raises. When pay goes up, a slightly bigger room or more rides by app in the rain often follow, and the extra disappears.

Is it enough?

For someone sharing a house and cooking now and then, yes, with a few million spare in a calm month. For a foreigner, the comparison is less direct: visas, international health insurance and the kind of apartment most newcomers want all cost more. Treat 15 million as a picture of a careful local life, not a budget to copy.

Example month based on typical October 2026 prices; not financial advice.
