Around 11:45 the lift lobbies in Duy Tân and Phạm Hùng fill up with lanyards. Half the building heads for the lanes behind the towers, the other half is already refreshing a delivery app. Lunch is a small decision repeated twenty-two times a month, and in Hanoi it usually costs between 40,000 and 55,000 VND, about $1.50 to $2.10.

Cơm văn phòng: the default

"Office rice" shops are everywhere office workers are. You point at the trays: braised pork, fried tofu with tomato, morning glory with garlic, a fried egg. Rice and a thin soup come with it. Depending on how many dishes you pick, a plate costs 40,000–55,000 VND. Some shops pack it in a box so you can eat at your desk.

Noodles when it's cold or you're in a hurry

Bún chả, bún bò, phở, bánh đa cua. A bowl at a plain neighbourhood shop is 40,000–60,000 VND, more on the main roads. In winter the noodle shops fill up first.

The lunch box from home

A lot of people bring food two or three days a week, usually leftovers from dinner. Offices have a microwave and a fridge for exactly this. It is less about health and more about money: home-cooked lunches cost maybe 20,000–25,000 VND each.

Delivery: easy and quietly expensive

Apps are convenient when it is raining or you are stuck in a meeting. The catch is the extra 15,000–25,000 VND for delivery and service, which adds a third or more to a cheap meal. That is why office groups order together: four people, one shop, one shared fee.

A month of lunches

  • Eating out every working day at about 45,000 VND: roughly 1 million VND
  • Bringing food twice a week: around 750,000–800,000 VND
  • Delivery most days: easily 1.3–1.5 million VND

If you are visiting

Go where the lanyards go between 11:30 and 12:30. A rice shop full of people in office clothes will be quick, cheap and fresh, because food that sells out by one o'clock does not sit around.

Prices observed in October 2026; central business districts are at the top of the range.
